The Stony Brook Seawolves are having a comeback season after not winning a game last year. With new coaching and new strategies, Stony Brook is 6-2 this season and has a solid chance of making the playoffs.
Head Coach Billy Cosh gave the credit for turning the program around to the players.
“We had to do a lot of different ways, different things, you know, with our culture and how we thought, how he worked, and how we, you know, did things right, on and off the field,” Cosh said. “And the guys started seeing the why, I think that’s the big thing with any young man. You give him the why.”
One of these things is always being three minutes early. Coach Cosh said this comes from Coach Bill Snyder, a former head football coach at Kansas State University.
Cosh credits much of his success to bits and pieces he has learned from other coaches and his father who was also a college football coach. He stresses that the Seawolves are a process-driven organization and take practice day by day.
“You know, it takes Sunday through Friday to Saturday kickoff to get to where we need to get to,” Cosh said. “It’s the process and the preparation. We’re not worried about the outcome.”
In its most recent game against William & Mary, the defense was a crucial factor in the win. AJ Roberts, a linebacker for the Seawolves, had 11 tackles and an interception that he ran for a touchdown.
There has been some switching around at quarterback for Stony Brook, but it seems now it will stick with graduate student Tyler Knoop, a transfer from Georgetown, taking many of the snaps. He went 15 for 26 last game with two touchdowns and an interception.

Coach Cosh said the team is focusing on putting all three aspects of the game together: offense, defense and special teams. The team is not letting the recent hype affect it.
Stony Brook takes on Bryant this week. If the Seawolves win, that will already clinch a winning season for the team. The Seawolves are tied for third in the Colonial Athletic Association with Villanova, both holding 3-1 records.
