Senior quarterbacks and familiar coaches face off for the National Title

By: Holly Malkowski

The North Dakota State University Bison and the Montana State University Bobcats are no strangers to each other. In fact, NDSU ended MSU’s season last year in an overtime playoff thriller in Bobcat Stadium. The Bobcats haven’t lost a game since.

has started 53 consecutive games for NDSU, dating back to 2021. The Bobcats have senior Tommy Mellott, who has also been starting since 2021. He was injured during the fourth quarter of last season’s matchup between the two teams, but is back this year with a vengeance. He has thrown for 1943 yards and 20 touchdowns, along with adding over 500 rushing yards and nine touchdowns on the ground.

Tim Polasek is in his first year as NDSU’s head coach, but has been with the Bison in the past as a running back coach and offensive coordinator. Brent Vigen became the Bobcats head coach in 2021, after coaching at Wyoming and NDSU himself. The two coaches know each other well and speak very highly of each other. Polasek even bought the Vigen’s house when he went to coach at Wyoming.
