SoCon Week 5 Preview

The Southern Conference has an interesting slate of games for week 5, with 7 SoCon teams in action. Top stories being undefeated Mercer trying to continue their dominance while winless Chattanooga is vying for that first win.

All games this week are conference matchups besides Chattanooga hosting Portland State of the Big Sky conference. For Mercer they travel to Spartanburg, South Carolina for a date with Wofford. DJ. Smith and Mercer looking to continue their undefeated impressive season so far as they lead the SoCon standings 4-0 overall and 2-0 in SoCon play so far.  On the other side of the coin, you have Wofford hosting for their SoCon opener and being 2-1 overall this season and Redshirt Freshman, Quarterback Amari Odom as well as transfer safety CJ Coombes looks to lead the Terriers to a win over the Bears to spoil their trip to Spartanburg and have them leave with their first loss.

In Chattanooga, The Mocs look to get on the right track and get their first win, as Portland State comes all the way across the country, this is the first time the two schools will face each other in their histories. Head Coach Rusty Wright, Quarterback Chase Artopoeus and the Mocs look to right the ship as 2 weeks ago they took an upset loss 10-3 to Mercer.  The Mocs entered 2024 as the SoCon favorite and with high hopes, but so far that that hasn’t come to fruition. Against the Bears the Mocs were 0-12 on third down attempts and saw their final six drives come up empty.  We will see how the bye week fared for them and what happens for this offense come Saturday against the Vikings.

As for the other matchups, ETSU will travel to The Citadel and Samford will travel to Furman.

Week 5 fares to be another interesting week of SoCon football as well as throughout the FCS.
