SoCon Week 7

Updated: 4 days ago

The Southern Conference has some great matchups this week after a busy week 6.  We have 5 games and 1 non-conference matchup this week.

Starting this week and Saturday with VMI at Wofford, The winless Keydets head to Spartanburg to take on the Wofford Terriers. The Keydets head in scoring 11 points per game compared to Wofford’s 17.6, Wofford last week came off a close loss to Western Carolina in a rare game without spectators, reminding us all of the Spring 2020 Covid season. Wofford took the loss 21-17. They enter this week against VMI 2-3 on the year.

Next, Chattanooga visits Greenville, SC for a matchup with the Furman Paladins, both teams enter the game 2-3, with Chattanooga getting the upset win 17-10 on the road last weekend at No.23 ETSU in the Rail Rivalry, while the Paladins picked up a close win 17-16 in Charleston against The Citadel. This weekend’s matchup will make the two teams third matchup in less than a year (344 days) with two games last season, with the Paladins getting the best of Chattanooga in both matchups, one in the regular season and one playoff matchup.

This week The Bulldogs of The Citadel will travel to Cullowhee to meet with The Western Carolina Catamounts. This game welcoming fans back after last week’s game against Wofford was played without spectators. The Catamounts enter this week 2-3 while The Bulldogs will take the field with a 2-4 record. Cole Gonzales of the Catamounts is second in the SoCon in passing while Jonathan Bennett of The Citadel is third.

Samford will travel to Johnson City, TN to play ETSU, Last week the Bucs took a disappointing upset loss at home to unranked Chattanooga 17-10 The Rail went back to Chattanooga once again. The 2-2 Samford Bulldogs hoping to take advantage of that against a now 3-3 Buccaneers team. However, the Bucs still have a strong offense led by SoCon leading rusher Bryson Irby.

Finally, we save the SoCon leaders for last as the 5-0 Mercer Bears hold home field against Ivy League Princeton, The Tigers come into Macon, Georgia 1-2 on the season. However, the Bears are going to be a tough challenge for this Ivy League squad, The Bears have a seven-game winning streak over non-conference opponents in the regular season, last losing to Abilene Christian on October 31st, 2020, in a nailbiter 20-17.  Head Coach Mike Jacobs and Junior Quarterback DJ Smith look to continue this magic season as the Bears hold a program best ranking at No.7 in the Country.

It should be another fun week of football in the Southern Conference! As well as FCS Football.
