Week 8 Brings four Southern Conference matchups, as we are over halfway through the 2024 season now.
First, we have Chattanooga (3-3) Vs Wofford (3-3) at Finley Stadium in Chattanooga, TN. The Mocs enter this week on a three-game winning streak, with wins over Portland State, ETSU and Furman. Head Coach Rusty Wright and Senior Quarterback Chase Artopoeus look to keep the streak going against a fellow 3-3 SoCon foe. While Wofford looks to continue after a big win over VMI 31-16 last week, led by sophomore quarterback Paul Seely V.
Next, The Citadel (2-5) at VMI (0-6). The Bulldogs look for a third win of the season after a 30-16 loss at Western Carolina, while a winless VMI team looks for that ever elusive first win of the 2024 season after a 31-16 loss to Wofford. Bulldogs Graduate Quarterback, Jonathan Bennett looks to lead again, third in the SoCon in passing, to win and not disappoint against the Winless Keydets.
Western Carolina (3-3) visits Furman (2-4) this week as Junior Quarterback, Cole Gonzales matches up with Furman’s Freshman Quarterback Trey Hedden. Gozales has 1,528 yards on 145 completions on 230 attempts with 5 touchdowns with 7 interceptions, while Hedden of Furman has 1,030 yards on 77 completions on 130 attempts with 7 touchdowns to his 6 interceptions. This could be a great matchup via the air as both teams are top 5 in the Southern Conference in passing with Western Carolina leading.
Finally we have Mercer (6-0) at Samford (2-3) The 7th ranked Bears look to continue their amazing undefeated season as they face the Bulldogs, who haven’t been as impressive this season as they have been in recent years especially going back to their 11-2 season in 2022. However, the Bulldogs have played well at home and are 2-0 at Pete Hanna Stadium this season. Meanwhile The Mercer Bears look to make that 2-1.
Another week of fantastic Southern Conference football is upon us in the FCS, and it looks to be another great one.
