Week 9 in the SoCon looks to be the biggest yet, with Mercer dropping to Samford last week there is a major opening for the conference lead with 2 teams tied for second at 3-1, Chattanooga and Mercer, with Western Carolina just ahead at 3-0 in conference play.
We start Saturday with Samford visiting Charleston, S.C, after last weeks huge upset over 7th ranked Mercer the Bulldogs look to continue the momentum over The Citadel. Samford is currently 3-3 overall and 2-1 in Southern Conference play, while The Citadel is 3-5 overall and 1-4 in SoCon play. They picked up a 13-10 win at VMI last week.
ETSU will visit Wofford this week, fresh off a bye, the Buccaneers come off a win last time out vs Samford 31-28 in Johnson City. Wofford returns home after a big loss on the road to Chattanooga 37-5. ETSU with their last win, went to 4-3 overall and 2-1 in Southern Conference play. Meanwhile Wofford after last weeks loss to Chattanooga is 3-4 overall and 1-3 in SoCon play.
Up next is the big one, Western Carolina visits Mercer in Macon, GA. Mercer was ranked 7th in the country and undefeated overall. Western Carolina had a dominant win over Furman 52-20 in which quarterback Cole Gonzales passed for a SoCon single game record 620 yards, and 5 touchdowns in a total offensive production of 801 yards. On the other side, Mercer took a huge upset loss to Samford 55-35 propelled by a huge 28-point first quarter by Samford. Western Carolina and Mercer will fight for sole control of the Southern Conference in this matchup.
Lastly, we have winless traveling to Chattanooga, TN to take on the Mocs as they are hot and have won 4 straight and look to go for 5 straight against the Keydets. Head Coach Rusty Wright and his Mocs come off a 37-5 win over Wofford last week headed by a great rushing attack led by running back Reggie Davis and quarterback Chase Artopoeus as well as a great defensive performance as we have become accustomed to seeing this season by Chattanooga as they forced 4 interceptions. All of them leading to 20 of the 37 scored points. Chattanooga looks to continue this trend and win their 5th straight game and stay in the hunt in the Southern Conference.
