What do the South Dakota State Jackrabbits and Kansas City Chiefs have in common?

Writer's picture: Stone LabanowitzStone Labanowitz

I understand the headline may sound confusing. I get that, that's kind of the point. It's not just that these two teams share something in common, it's that they stand in a league all their own.

TWO THINGS ARE TRUE:

  1. The South Dakota State Jackrabbits will be favored in every single game they play this season.

  2. The Kansas City Chiefs will be favored in every single game they play this season.

After the schedules are released, it's common for fans around the country to attempt to map out which games they think their team has a chance to win. They'll compare their projected wins with other teams or conference and see if it's enough to get into the playoffs.

For both teams, figuring out which games they have a chance in is easy - because they're favored to win every single one.

Week 11 the Chiefs get a rematch with the Philadelphia Eagles, at home - on a Monday night. That line will be low, most likely in that 1-5 range.

Week 14 the Chiefs host Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills. That line will be low, most likely that 1-5 range.

Week 17 the Chiefs will defend "Burrowhead" when Joe Burrow comes to town. That line will be low, most likely in that 1-5 range.

The rest of their schedule is not up for discussion.

So that's cool. Congrats Pat ... your wife is still really annoying.

Of course your mind goes to "I guarantee you Georgia, Alabama, & Ohio State are favored in every game as well."

You'd be correct:

This was last season in the FBS, expect there to be a few 'Air Forces' Oklahomas' and 'Utahs' this season come next month as the sportsbooks get geared up for the season and the odds get posted. In conclusion, there are a handful of teams in the FBS who will be favored in every single game in 2023.

IN THE FCS, THERE IS ONE.

Now none of this can be fact checked, because not even BETMGM posts their FCS lines before the season starts, nor do they have win totals provided.

So, the next step would be to scour the pre-season top 10 list and check their schedules.

Montana State plays South Dakota State in Week 2.

Furman goes to South Carolina to take on Shane Beamer & the Gamecocks in Week 2.

North Dakota State plays South Dakota State in Week 9.

Idaho & Coach Eck will test their luck with Nevada, Cal, & Montana State.

Samford plays Auburn Week 3.

Holy Cross plays Boston College in Week 2.

*Incarnate Word plays FBS UTEP in Week 1 which very well may be a pick'em*

William & Mary travels to Virginia (ACC) in Week 6.

SEMO goes to Manhattan to play Kansas State in Week 1.

Given South Dakota State's run to the National Championship last season, it makes sense. They're currently just a cut above the rest. What's not to like about Jimmy Rodgers? Bedside's the fact that he's been handed a roster full of kids who know the expectation is to win another national championship, he is more than capable of doing the job. They won't say it publicly, but it must be so fun to go from the one doing the chasing, to the one being chased. Buckle up, we're in for an awesome season.

WHAT I WON'T DO

I will not start comparing SDSU players to Chiefs players. Although it'd be fun breaking down the similarities between Isiah Pacheco & Isiah Davis, it stops with Patrick Mahomes & Mark Gronowski ... sorry Mark.
